93 % of American social media users think companies should use it too
(October 21, 2008)

According to a new survey,

93 percent of social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media, while an overwhelming 85 percent believe a company should not only be present but also interact with its consumers via social media. In fact, 56 percent of users feel both a stronger connection with and better served by companies when they can interact with them in a social media environment.

This is good news as far as I'm concerned but I must say that I'm surprised. Sure, certain companies who want to interact with me and my family are welcome to this Canadian but I'm not sure all my family agree that most companies should be hangin' with us on Facebook or MySpace.

Still, an even more interesting finding is that men, a much sought-after target online, are twice as likely as women to frequently interact with companies via social media (33% vs 17%).

Again, I'm not sure how well these numbers would translate in Canada but here's more about what Americans who use social media tend to think about companies and social media:

  • (43%) - companies should use social networks to solve my problems
  • (41%) - companies should solicit feedback on their products and services
  • (37%) - companies should develop new ways for consumers to interact with their brand
  • (25%) - companies should market to consumers

I am encouraged that 56& of users feel both a stronger connection with and better served by companies when they can interact with them in a social media environment. I recommend extending brand conversations to social media for just about all my clients.
