Pass it on or just Stumble
(February 16, 2008)

So apparently not everyone is like me! Hum. Whodathunkit? Not everyone loves to spend a few hours everyday just rambling around the internet everyday. I'm far from being a trend-setter type surfer mind you - über is not really me.

However, I've come to realize that I need to share more of what I know to be worthwhile and fun internet habits. In doing so, I not only promote my place of business, I have happier friends and colleagues, the latter being very rewarding. Really, there are not that many people who want to be left behind the latest technology thrust in our daily lives. It's OK to say that you're opting out but you need to at least have an idea what your opting out of.

So in yesterday's meeting I did my best to encourage the less tech-inclined to give a couple of new to the websites a go... kick the tires and see how it felt. Having gathered a little of their personal preferences and personalities communication needs I recommended amoungst other sites, LinkedIn, Seth Godin's blog, and Stumbleupon.

I was struck by the fact that extremely intelligent people could be scared of and intimidated by the net. A common complaint was that they never knew where to go. A newspaper, they'd learned to flip through the pages until they found something of interest. They just had no idea of where to go to find things of interest to them on the net. Faced with the blank search box, they had no idea what to type. Stumbleupon is great for someone like this.

LinkedIn is the primo business networking site for North Americans. There are other sites out there and if you're in the business of promoting any service or product then adding more to your list is essential to building an online footprint. LinkedIn is perhaps 2nd best in terms of features, Xing being number one. Xing however, is European centric and knowledge of German is a big asset.
